What does my money have to do with it?

Rachellecobb   -

The other day someone asked me, “I don’t see how giving to the church helps me be more missional. If I’m to be a missionary where I live, work, and play, what does my money have to do with it?”

Good question! The short answer: Everything.

Just ask Mary, Susanna, Joanna and Joseph.

These people helped support Jesus’ ministry. Since none of the disciples nor Jesus had jobs in the traditional sense, their “support” came from something other than a love offering.

“…he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him, and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s household manager, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their means.” (Luke 8:1-3 ESV)

Joseph of Arimathea donated his own tomb to Jesus … for the short time he needed it (Mt. 27:57-60).

It can sometimes be easy to point to how giving to the church can help us reach ministry goals like building a new Ladson campus, expanding the Goose Creek campus, providing curriculum for our JourneyKids ministry, and helping send students to summer camp.

But here at Journey we know our mission is first and foremost to develop and deploy disciples. That mission plays out each week through the JourneyKids volunteer explaining to an inquisitive child what baptism means, the counselor providing the tools a struggling couple needs to save their marriage, or one of our campus pastors teaching someone how to SOAP for the first time.

Giving to the church helps put people far from God in these encounters with Jesus that will change the trajectory of their lives.

Journey’s mission is to develop and deploy disciples so that every man, woman, and child would have multiple opportunities to see, hear, and respond to the gospel. Giving of your own resources makes that mission possible by funding the next LoveGave, the next Missional Community leader training, the next Chosen Project grant that brings a child home to a family of their own.

Thank you for partnering with us in this mission!
